My Thoughts on Training and Consistency
I wanted to share some reflections on training and the power of consistency.
With over 20 years of experience running and coaching track athletes, and another 20 years playing Australian Rules Football, I've learned a thing or two about perseverance. While I was never the standout player on the field or the fastest sprinter, I did manage to earn my share of medals and accolades along the way. I was selected to trial at the highest level of football as a teenager, ranked in the top 20 masters 400m runners globally at age 42 with a time of 52.1 seconds.
I mention these experiences not to boast but to highlight that consistency was my secret weapon. I might not have had the most skill, but my determination to outwork everyone else set me apart. Through rain, hail, or shine, I never missed a training session. Similarly, as a coach, I embraced this philosophy. My insights and understanding of my athletes helped them excel, with two of them ranking in the top five in the world in their age groups and another making the Australian Winter Olympic Team.
Were my coaching programs the absolute best? Perhaps not. Could my athletes have achieved even more under a different coach? We will never know. What I do know is that they showed up week after week, year after year, dedicated to the process.
Consistency is KEY. Put in the work, and trust the journey.
Run, lift, and stay consistent.
